Citric Acid is a weak organic acid found in citrus fruits. In the fiber art world, it is used as an alternative to vinegar or acetic acid 56% when dyeing protein fibers such as silk or wool. It can be used both with Acid Dyes and Fiber Reactive Dyes on protein fibers. The big advantage - economical and has NO ODOR! Use 1 TBS to one pound dry fiber for immersion dyeing. Use 4 tsp. per quart (32 oz.) as a pre-soak for direct application of either Fiber Reactive or Acid Dyes, when steaming or microwaving to set. There are roughly 3 cups in a 1lb bag.

Awesome! So glad I don't have to run out and buy gallon after gallon of vinegar anymore. As for measurement I see a lot of different guidestables out there... I've found that mixing 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of citric acid into each 1 quart (32 oz.) mason jar of dye works perfectly.

I don't know why it took me so long to switch from using vinegar to using citric acid for my yarn dyeing but I'm so glad I did. This stuff works like a charm and is easier and less expensive than white vinegar.

Using citric acid is so much cheaper than vinegar and also eliminates that awful vinegar smell. It's easy to use and works great!
